Cold Frames & Row Covers: A Zone-by-Zone Frost Protection Guide

First frost spans roughly ten weeks across USDA Hardiness Zones. A Zone 4b gardener may see it by late September; a Zone 8a gardener may not until late November. Deploying cold frames and row covers too early means weeks of heat stress and reduced airflow; deploying too late means cellular damage to crops that were otherwise days from harvest.

The two primary season-extension tools are cold frames and floating row covers. They protect through different mechanisms and suit different crops. This guide gives zone-specific deployment windows alongside the temperature thresholds that determine which tool to reach for first.
Cold Frames vs. Row Covers: Temperature Thresholds
A cold frame is a bottomless box with a transparent lid (glass, twin-wall polycarbonate, or rigid plastic). The glazing traps solar radiation and creates a microclimate 10 to 20°F warmer than ambient air, depending on lid material. Black water-filled jugs placed inside the frame act as thermal mass and can extend overnight protection by another 5 to 10°F.
Floating row covers trap heat that radiates upward from the soil and plant canopy after sunset. Protection varies directly with fabric weight:
- Lightweight (0.55 oz/sq yd): 2 to 4°F protection, 85% light transmission
- Medium (1.25 oz/sq yd): 4 to 6°F protection, 70% light transmission
- Heavy (2.0 oz/sq yd): 6 to 10°F protection, 50% light transmission
Row covers scale to any bed size and apply faster than assembling a cold frame. For most first-frost events in Zones 5 through 8, medium-weight fabric is the right default. In colder zones, layer medium fabric inside a cold frame, or switch to heavy-weight fabric when forecasts drop below 26°F.
Zone 4b: Deploy by September 15
Zone 4b averages its first frost between September 25 and October 5, with early events possible from September 10 onward. For peppers, tomatoes, and winter squash to reach full harvest, season extension here is mandatory rather than optional.
Deploy target: Row covers on warm-season crops by September 10. Cold frames assembled over greens beds by September 15.
Crop priorities: Tomatoes, peppers, basil, and cucumbers suffer cellular damage at 32°F and should be covered or harvested before any forecast frost event. Kale, spinach, and carrots tolerate light frost without covers. Broccoli, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts harden with repeated cold exposure; they typically need no cover until sustained temperatures fall below 20°F.
Cold frame capacity: A single-glazed cold frame extends lettuce and spinach production 4 to 6 weeks past first frost in Zone 4b. A double-wall polycarbonate lid extends that window to 8 weeks, carrying greens into November.

Zone 5b: Set Up by October 1
Zone 5b averages first frost between October 5 and October 15, but the range in any given year can span late September to late October. That variability rewards early setup over forecast-reactive deployment.
Deploy target: Lightweight row covers on heat-sensitive crops by September
- Cold frames positioned over greens beds by October 1.
Soil temperature as a secondary trigger: When soil at 2-inch depth falls below 50°F, warm-season crops stop taking up nutrients effectively, regardless of air temperature. In Zone 5b this threshold arrives in late September. Row covers slow soil cooling by 3 to 5°F, which extends active nutrient uptake by 1 to 2 weeks and translates to measurable additional fruit set on late-season tomatoes.
Additional crop to protect: Winter squash that has not yet fully cured. Skin hardening occurs most efficiently at 50 to 55°F; a hard freeze before curing reduces storage life substantially.

Zones 6 and 7: Per-Forecast Cover Deployment
First frost in Zones 6a through 7b runs from mid-October through mid-November. The window is wide enough that continuous cover deployment is impractical. Most gardeners in this range monitor the 10-day forecast from October 1 and deploy covers on a per-event basis.
Medium-weight row cover (1.25 oz/sq yd, 4 to 6°F protection) handles the majority of first-frost events in these zones, which typically land between 28 and 34°F. A single night at 28°F is survivable for tomatoes under medium fabric. A three-night stretch below 26°F is not: pick green tomatoes at that point and ripen them indoors at 60 to 65°F.
Cold frames in Zones 6 and 7 provide the most value for overwintering cold-hardy greens. Spinach, mache, and arugula survive to 15°F inside a frame with thermal mass, which in Zone 7b means near-continuous production through winter with no active heat source.
Zone 8a: Row Covers as Standby Equipment
Zone 8a averages first frost between November 15 and December 1. Most events here are brief: one or two nights at 28 to 32°F, followed by a return to mild temperatures. Lightweight row cover (0.55 oz/sq yd) is adequate protection for warm-season crops still in the ground in late November.
Deploy target: Have covers on hand by November 1. Continuous deployment before a forecast event is unnecessary, but physical setup takes 15 to 20 minutes per bed. When a forecast drops to 32°F for an overnight low, that lead time becomes meaningful.
Cold frame use in Zone 8a: Cold frames provide minimal frost-protection value here. Their more useful function is warming soil in October for early-winter cool-season crops. A frame over a cleared bed raises soil temperature enough to germinate spinach and lettuce 3 to 4 weeks ahead of open-bed timing.
What first frost does not end: Kale, collards, and chard in Zone 8a continue producing through December and into January. Cover them only if a multi-night cold snap is forecast, specifically more than two nights below 26°F.

Crop Kill Temperatures
Efficient protection means targeting the right crops first. These are the damage and kill thresholds for common fall garden crops:

Match cover weight to the gap between the forecast low and the crop’s kill temperature. If Zone 5b shows 30°F overnight and you’re protecting tomatoes, medium fabric (5°F protection) keeps foliage at 35°F: adequate margin. If the forecast shows 25°F, use heavy fabric or move those beds into a cold frame.
Using Overnight Lows as a Backup Trigger
Frost dates are averages with significant year-to-year spread, and 10-day forecasts carry meaningful uncertainty past day 5. A reliable secondary trigger is the extended-forecast overnight low: when the 10-day outlook shows consistent lows below 50°F, overnight frost risk is typically 2 to 4 weeks out.
In Zone 4b, overnight lows cross below 50°F by early September. In Zone 5b, the threshold arrives in late September. In Zone 8a, consistent lows below 50°F appear in November. Using that forecast-low threshold as a setup trigger ensures covers are ready before an early event, without the labor of continuous deployment through the full fall shoulder period.
