Heat Stress in Zones 9 and 10 (July through August)

When soil temperatures exceed 95°F, tomato roots reduce water and nutrient absorption even when the soil is adequately moist. The result is interveinal chlorosis that starts on mid-canopy leaves and spreads outward. Fruit set stops at the same time.
Corrective steps:
- Water deeply at the root zone before 8 a.m. to lower soil temperature through evaporative cooling.

Nutrient-driven yellow leaves follow predictable patterns tied to which element is deficient and how it moves inside the plant.
Nitrogen deficiency starts on the oldest, lowest leaves and moves upward uniformly. The entire leaf turns pale yellow, not just the tissue between veins. Correct it with a balanced water-soluble fertilizer (10-10-10 or fish emulsion) watered in at the root zone.
Magnesium deficiency produces interveinal chlorosis: the tissue between the veins yellows while the veins stay bright green. It appears most often mid-canopy on actively fruiting plants, because tomatoes pull magnesium from older leaves to feed developing fruit. Epsom salt spray corrects it within one to two weeks.
Iron deficiency mimics magnesium but starts on the youngest, newest leaves rather than mid-canopy tissue. Soil pH above 7.0 locks out iron even when it is present in the soil. Correct pH to 6.2–6.8 first; then apply chelated iron as a foliar spray.

Fungal Diseases by Zone: Septoria, Blight, and Fusarium
Fungal yellowing follows a bottom-up pattern and moves faster in humid zones than in dry ones.
Septoria leaf spot starts as small brown spots with yellow halos on the lowest leaves, then spreads upward through water splash and infected soil. It is most aggressive in Zones 6 through 9 where summer humidity stays high. Remove affected leaves immediately and switch to drip or soaker irrigation.
Early blight (Alternaria solani) produces concentric rings inside the yellow lesions, giving a target-board appearance. It thrives in warm, wet conditions and peaks in Zones 7 through 9.
Fusarium wilt produces one-sided yellowing that climbs a single stem while the other side stays green. Slice the stem cleanly: brown vascular discoloration inside confirms Fusarium. No chemical fix exists once a plant is infected; remove it and rotate tomatoes out of that bed for at least three years.

Watering Problems: Overwatering and Underwatering
Both excess and deficit irrigation produce yellow leaves, which makes watering errors easy to misdiagnose.
Overwatering suffocates roots by displacing soil oxygen. Affected leaves are typically soft and slightly limp at the petiole. The soil smells sour near the root zone. Zones 5 through 8 gardeners who water on a fixed schedule during cool, cloudy stretches are most at risk.
Underwatering produces crisp, curling yellow leaves. Lower leaves yellow first and the plant may drop blossoms. In Zones 9 and 10, underwatering can develop within 48 hours during a heat wave.

When to Remove Yellow Leaves
Pull any leaf that is more than 50% yellow. Removing it eliminates a potential fungal spore source and redirects plant energy to fruit. Use clean, dry pruners; do not remove leaves during wet conditions, when spore splash risk is highest.
Leave leaves that are only slightly pale or lightly speckled. They still contribute to photosynthesis, and removing too many at once stresses the plant further, particularly in high-heat zones.
